Answer-first writing means putting the direct answer to a question in the very first sentence, then adding detail. It is the inverted pyramid used by journalists, applied to every page, section and FAQ. Answer engines quote the clearest, most self-contained passage they can find, and answer-first writing produces exactly that.
The formula: answer, specifics, context
- Answer: one sentence that directly answers the question, starting with the subject.
- Specifics: one or two facts that make it useful, such as a number, price, time or place.
- Context: anything else the reader needs, in the following sentences or sections.
Keep the answer and specifics to 40 to 60 words. That length is long enough to be complete and short enough to be quoted whole.
Templates you can copy
- What is X? "X is [category] that [main benefit]. It [key fact or number]."
- How much does X cost? "X costs [price or range] [per unit or time]. [What affects the price]."
- How do I X? "To [do X], [first step], then [second step]. It takes about [time]."
- Is X worth it? "X is worth it if [condition], because [reason with a fact]. It is less suitable if [condition]."
- X vs Y? "X is better for [use case], while Y is better for [use case]. The main difference is [fact]."
Where to use answer-first writing
- The first paragraph under your H1: answer the main question of the page.
- The first sentence under each heading: answer the question the heading asks.
- FAQ answers: yes or no first, then the facts.
- Meta descriptions: the same answer in under 155 characters.
Common mistakes
- Warming up: "In today's fast-paced world…" delays the answer. Cut it.
- Pronoun openings: "It is…" or "This is…" makes no sense when quoted alone. Name the subject.
- Vague claims: "affordable" and "fast" mean nothing to an answer engine. Give numbers.
- Burying the answer after a long story. Story second, answer first.
Quick self-check
