AEO for beginners: a plain-English guide

No jargon. What answer engines are, how they pick what to quote, and five changes you can make today.

AEO, short for Answer Engine Optimization, means making your web pages easy for AI tools and search engines to quote as a direct answer. When someone asks Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity or a voice assistant a question, they often get one written answer instead of a list of links. AEO helps your page become one of the sources behind that answer.

What is an answer engine?

An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with an answer rather than a list of websites. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Siri and Alexa all work this way. They read pages from the web, pick the clearest passages and combine them into a reply, usually with links to the pages they used.

Why should a small website care?

Because the answer is often the only thing people read. If your page is quoted, you are seen as the expert even when the user does not click. If a competitor is quoted instead, they get that trust. The good news: answer engines care more about clear, well-structured pages than about big brands, so small sites can win.

How do answer engines choose what to quote?

Think of an answer engine as a busy researcher with five minutes. It looks for:

  • A direct answer, right at the top, that makes sense on its own.
  • Clear headings that say what each section answers.
  • Specific facts such as numbers, prices and steps.
  • Signs of trust: who wrote it, when it was updated, where the facts come from.
  • Access: its robot must be allowed to read the page.

Five changes you can make today

  1. Answer first. Start your page with two or three sentences that directly answer the main question. Read our guide to answer-first writing.
  2. Turn headings into questions. "Pricing" becomes "How much does it cost?".
  3. Add a short FAQ with four to six real questions customers ask you.
  4. Add schema, a small block of code that labels your FAQ and your business for machines. The Free AEO Checker writes it for you.
  5. Let AI bots in. Make sure your robots.txt does not block them; use the AI robots.txt generator.

Is AEO different from SEO?

A little. SEO helps your page rank in a list of results. AEO helps a specific paragraph get chosen as the answer. They work together: answer engines still find pages through search, so good SEO is the foundation and AEO is the finishing layer.
